I remember on a weekend getaway to New York state with my then fiancee, now husband, we stopped at lavender farm. We could smell it before we could see it. If you've checked into the Liz Lounge, you know I love a good cuppa tea so I picked up a jar of lavender infused honey while I was there. I don't mean sprigs of lavender in the jar, I mean these bees worked hard to take care of their lavender farm and the honey they produced was out of this world!
I also picked up a bunch of dried lavender. I would later add a sprig to each one of our hand-made wedding invitations. I always have fond memories when I see the little purple buds. I never thought I would later share this beautiful flower in my daily work...
Lavender is a popular scent. It's versatile and blends well with other oils, such as frankincense and lemon. It can aid in relaxation and even help to keep a clean home. Here are some uses for lavender essential oil.
• Relaxation: add 1 – 2 drops to Jojoba oil and apply to temples and bottoms of feet before bed. For extra relaxation, add a few drops to Epsom salts and then add to a bath.
• Skin soothing: add 1-2 drops to Jojoba oil and apply to burns and scrapes.
• Calm surroundings: in your home, bring water to a boil, then remove from heat. Next add 1-2 drops to the water and diffuse for 15 minutes.
• Supple skin: add 1-2 drops of Jojoba oil and massage into your skin before bedtime.
• Odor eliminator: add 1-2 drops to a cotton ball and place in trash can.
As I write this, it's freezing outside and I can actually feel the warmth of this photo! It's only February but I'm ready for the scents and pops of color of spring. If you could use a dose of lavender too, maybe one of these beauties will lift your spirits.
I see them everywhere. The vats of goopy electric green or blue sanitizers perched on desks, by cash registers, and in my doctor's office. Or the little mini bottles clipped to backpacks or purses. I get it; we want to protect ourselves on the go but are we really?
Have you ever wondered what you are slathering all over your hands every day, multiple times a day? Are your hands getting dry because it's that season or is something else contributing? Next time you reach for hand sanitizer, check the label.
First, are the ingredients listed on the back of the product? Second, do you even know what the ingredients are? Here are some ingredients to avoid:
Alcohol, there are those that cause dryness, such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat, methanol and Benzyl Alcohol, and others that are fatty and emoillant such as Cetearyl and Stearyl. If only the word "alcohol" is listed on the label, I suggest looking at another product.
Triclosan is an active ingredient in many "anti-bacterial" products and is registered with the government as a pesticide. It is a known endocrine disruptor. The endocrine system regulates all the biological processes in the body so why would we want to "disrupt" it? Oh, and it could be lurking in your toothpaste too, yes, that stuff you put in your mouth twice a day, so keep an eye out.
Methylisothiazolinone (M1) is a powerful biocide "preservative" used to kill off microorganisms, giving products a longer shelf life. This chemical may be linked to nerve damage. It's widely used in leave-on products though it's known to be sensitizing. The American Contact Dermatitis Society named M1 it's Allergan of the Year in 2013.
You can get your copy of ingredients to avoid in your personal and home care products here.
The easiest way to avoid these toxic hand sanitizers is to wash your hands with soap and water. But for those times when you can't, or you're not sure what's in your hand soap, try Pure Haven's hands on the go. It's 100% toxin-free. It is aloe based, so it also helps to nourish and hydrate your skin. With benefical organic essential oils such as lemon, tea tree, neem and clove bud, which are naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, you can safely fight germs at work, school, or the gym.

I know, I know, it's THE topic at the beginning of a new year. As it should be! I don't know why it's so hard for us women to accomplish what should be a simple task. How can we expect to give our best to our family and work if we can't even give the best to ourselves? You know what they say, you can't pour from an empty cup.
I think sometimes self-care gets a bad rap. As if you need to spend a full day at the spa to really soak it all in. While that is rejuvenating and fabulous, that's not reality for everyone.
I was surprised to hear at a recent event that most of the guests didn't even take time to wash their face daily. But, when I thought about it, actually it wasn't so surprising. It's surprising to me now because I offer non toxic skincare and taking care of my skin is actually one of the feel good things in my day, but there was a time in my life when I was knee deep in others' needs, my little ones. There were truly days when I felt I was lucky to take a shower.
But should we be lucky to take a shower? I mean can we not find 15 minutes? We shouldn't be too exhausted or busy for basic hygiene.
So what about building a life we don't constantly need a break from? If you can't find a little bit of time to sit in silence, read a book, or take a shower, then you need to sit down with a pen and paper and prioritize your life.
I recently discovered a way to create more time in my day. Yes, that's right, it can be done! It's called batch working. If you want to know more about it, you need to listen to Jenna Kutcher's Goal Digger podcast on this topic. Since I work from home, I am my own boss, motivational speaker, life coach, you get the idea... So it's important that I do have a routine in place.
I mean when I think about all the time I've wasted thinking about doing something or complaining about doing something instead of simply doing that something! Guess what? Taking action gets results. Now that I have this agenda for myself, I have discovered more time.
Batch working has helped me organize my week. It is NOT multi-tasking. I have a specific activity for each day of the week. When I wake up, I know what I'm going to do for the day and I stick to it. Yes, the unexpected comes up now and then, but at least I know to pick up where I left off.
Last week, when I completed my tasks before I had to pick up my son from morning pre-k, I realized I did have an extra 30 minutes. First thought was to empty the dishwasher but then I remembered, "no, that's my eight-year-old son's job". (That's another thing ladies, delegate!) So, with the washing machine already running and the beds already made, I gave myself permission to s l o w down. Let's face it ladies, even Jesus created alone time too! (Mark 1:35)
Let's assume you have your day figured out and now you've discovered extra time. What will you do with this precious resource?
Is there something you want to do and you need to put a plan in place to make it happen? Is there somewhere you want to go and now you can plan the itinerary or how you are going to save for it? Or is it just a good time to sit and sip tea in the sun? (Yup, I love that.)
Still not sure where to begin? Try some of these...
1. Pray, meditate or journal
2. Meal prep healthy options that will fuel you. I like following this feed (see what I did there)
3. Read a book, whether for personal development or fun. Here is one on my list.
4. Get your finances in order.
5. Pamper yourself at home and save time & money. Try using this sugar body scrub with this fun skincare tool.
6. Declutter, then donate or sell your stuff
7. Say "no". For real. You don't have to go everywhere and do all the things.
Self-care is not a dirty word. It's something you need to schedule into your day. Remember what they tell you on an airplane, put your oxygen mask on first, then help the person next to you.
Have you heard this stat before?
I know what you’re thinking, here it is, the schtick, the pitch, the…
Are there people out there giving my industry a bad name? You bet! And, guess what? I was one of them when I started! But you fail, learn, grow and move on.
So, now that’s out of the way, seriously, have you ever thought about this for a sec? What would your life be like with an additional $500 a month?
Now, think about what would be possible earning $12,000 a month…
I didn’t even entertain these thoughts when I started my own business. At the time, I was just thinking I loved the products and making a little extra on a flexible schedule. Even my passion for the mission came later. So, I am not going to tell you these income goals are even thought of or reached overnight. Anyone telling you this isn’t being straight with you. You have to dig deep and adjust your mindset and, yes, you do have to work for it.
Nothing is free. Nothing worth while is easy. Nothing feels better than pushing yourself and earning what you deserve for your hard work.
I used to get nervous talking about money. Thinking it made me sound greedy. But my faith tells me money is a means to serve others. When I think of what setting income goals means, it does not equate greed for me.
It means not crunching the numbers every paycheck to see how much will go to which bill.
It means offering some relief to my hard working husband and giving my family opportunities to live life to the fullest.
It means contributing more of my income to causes and charities I believe in, including my own faith-based theatre work.
Have you set an income goal for yourself? What does earning more mean for you? Your family? Your community?
What if building your own business on your own schedule means extra money to get by?
What if it means building a lifestyle in which you don’t have to think twice before swiping your debit card at the grocery store?
What it if means you build a legacy for your children…?
I know there is more to life than just paying the bills. And, I want more than this for you too. Money means opportunities and choices, and we could all use more of those. Please don’t be afraid of money! So, get real in the new year. Set measurable goals and celebrate every little victory.
I wish you the best of success in 2019!
Just so we're clear, I'm talking products here. No, I don't have tips on how to smooth things over with your mother-in-law. I'm talking about the problem of toxins in our everyday products, and letting you know, there is no need to compromise! Most of our life is about compromise, on this thing, this health thing, let's not compromise.
You know I am a messenger. I am not an expert, I am not an aromatherapist, I am not a doctor. I am a mom who wants the best for her family. And, for you.
Why does this even matter?
Well, maybe you or someone you know has a gluten sensitivity or eczema or psoriasis. Maybe it's important you shop organic or you're tired of being greenwashed by brands. Maybe it something more serious, perhaps you have asthma, or a chronic illness or you’re a cancer survivor and you really need to be careful about what you bring into your home and put on your body
Did you know that every day, women in the United States are exposed to more than 168 toxic chemicals? Even unborn children aren’t immune. Umbilical cord blood has been found to contain over 200 toxic chemicals! Some of the most common are triclosan, aluminum, fragrance, and propylene glycol.
Triclosan is an antibacterial agent found in toothpaste. It’s linked to hormone disrupting health concerns.
Aluminum is used as an antiperspirant. It plugs sweat ducts, preventing you from perspiring. It accumulates in your system, causing adverse health effects. Ladies, I know we don't like to pit, but sweat is one of the ways our bodies remove toxins. And, I don't know about you, but I don't want aluminum near "the girls".
Manufacturers aren’t required by the FDA to list fragrance ingredients, allowing them to legally hide hundreds of potentially harmful ingredients they want to keep secret.
Propylene glycol is a petrochemical. It’s a by-product of oil refinement, widely known as a toxic substance. It’s used in antifreeze, paints, skin care, hair care, and fragrances. Imagine getting a facial at the gas pump!
Have you ever considered how these toxins buildup over time? Toxic chemicals are absorbed directly into the blood stream through your skin. This is why the nicotine and sea sickeness patches are effective, because they go right into our bloodstream.
Some of these chemicals can be stored in your body for years, creating your body burden. Your skin, your largest organ, is a carrier—not a barrier. Is it a coincidence that disease rates are on the rise?
Since 2000, Alzheimer’s death rates increased 123%.
Since 1960, breast cancer diagnosis rates increased 150%.
Since 1995, children’s autism diagnosis rates increased 747%.
While there have been advances in diagnosing and documenting diseases, with all the advances of modern medicine, shouldn't those rates be going down, not up?
Why are toxic chemicals allowed in our products? Think about it, manufacturers of toxic products have to wear haz mat suits and follow strict safety guidelines when manufacturing their products. Why do they do it? Many reasons, including: Corporate America profits substantially from using cheaper ingredients. U.S. regulations don’t require toxic chemical testing for personal or home care products. Manufacturers choose what’s safe and those decisions are based on profits.
But, here’s the good news - you can make a difference! Use your dollars to make your voice heard. You are already buying these products, why not buy safe?
When I learned about this issue, I returned my toxic products and used the store credit to feed my family instead. Oh, and I bought towels too. Now my everyday essentials are delivered right to more door. And, good, one less thing I have to worry about!
So let's take a look at three popular gifts you may be planning to give (and how to read the label if your receive them):
It seems there is always a seasonal one or cute holiday labeling. But many of them contain that pesky "fragrance" or "parfum". Those are catch-all phrases. There are an untold number of chemicals hiding under these umbrella terms and you don't know what any are! Many contain phthalates, which are linked with birth defects, breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, autism and ADHD.
Find a hand cream with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and aloe. And the scent? Look for essential oils on the label. Check out dream cream - super hydrating this time of year and comes in three scents.
We see the little gift sets you can buy for your bestie or tween and teen but did you know many of them contain ingredients that actually dry out your lips so you have to keep using the product? Did you know woman consume 2-7 pounds of lip product per year?! Make sure you know what is in yours... Ditch the petroleum, alcohol or even lead! Here is a safe lip balm that comes in a four-pack so you can keep one in the cup holder of your car, your office drawer, your bag, and your vanity. But guess what, you probably won't need all of them because this stuff actually works! So keep one and gift the other three.
And last but not least, the scented candle. Have you ever noticed when you burn a candle that it gives off black soot or maybe the scent is so strong you can taste it or you get a headache? I have experienced all of those things. Including rashes on my arms.
Most candles are made out of paraffin wax, which is actually bleached petroleum. So choose candles with cotton wicks, natural waxes, like non gmo soy, beeswax, or coconut, and make sure the candle is scented with pure essential oils, not “fragrance”.
The holiday shipping deadline is approaching, so shop in your yoga pants with your fav beverage and get check some gifts off your list. Please, let me know how I can help you enjoy peace of mind this holiday season knowing you're gifting the safest and best. Don't we all want the best for the best in our lives?
In this season of gratitude, I am thankful for YOU! Your support of my business means you are providing your family with the safest products out there and you are helping me earn an income while making a difference. It's incredible how this business really is a win for all of us!
In this season of family gatherings and reunions with friends, please take the time to share this important message with them. You may save someone's life - truly! It warms my heart when I hear family, friends, and business partners tell me how this mission and these products have changed their health and even their outlook on life for the better. Let your loved ones know you want them to live the healthiest life possible, and one way to do this is by reducing their toxic body burden.
Check out this powerful and short (under 4 mins) video, then tell those you care about you have the solution to "the problem".
