Just so we're clear, I'm talking products here. No, I don't have tips on how to smooth things over with your mother-in-law. I'm talking about the problem of toxins in our everyday products, and I want you to know, there is no need to compromise! Most of our life is about compromise, on this thing, this health thing, let's not compromise.
You know I am a messenger. I am not an expert, I am not an aromatherapist, I am not a doctor. I am a mom who wants the best for her family. And, for you, too.
Why does this even matter?
Well, maybe you or someone you know has a gluten sensitivity or eczema or psoriasis. Maybe it's important you shop organic or you're tired of being greenwashed by brands. Maybe it something more serious, perhaps you have asthma, or a chronic illness or you’re a cancer survivor and you really need to be careful about what you bring into your home and put on your body.
Did you know that every day, women in the United States are exposed to more than 168 toxic chemicals? Even unborn children are exposed. Umbilical cord blood has been found to contain over 200 toxic chemicals! Some of the most common are isobutane, aluminum, fragrance, and propylene glycol.
What is this doing to your body?
Have you ever considered how these toxins buildup over time? Your skin, your largest organ, is a carrier—not a barrier. Is it a coincidence that disease rates are on the rise?
Since 2000, Alzheimer’s death rates increased 123%.
Since 1960, breast cancer diagnosis rates increased 150%.
Since 1995, children’s autism diagnosis rates increased 747%.
While there have been advances in diagnosing and documenting diseases, with all the advances of modern medicine, shouldn't those rates be going down, not up?
But, here’s the good news - you can make a difference! Use your dollars to make your voice heard. You are already buying these products, why not buy the safest products?
So let's take a look at three popular gifts you may be planning to give (and how to read the label if your receive them):
It seems there is always a seasonal one or cute holiday labeling. But many of them contain that pesky "fragrance" or "parfum". Those are catch-all phrases. There are an untold number of chemicals hiding under these umbrella terms and you don't know what any are! Many contain phthalates, which are linked with birth defects, breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, autism and ADHD.
Find a hand cream with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and aloe. And the scent? Look for essential oils on the label.
We see the little gift sets you can buy for your bestie or tween and teen but did you know many of them contain ingredients that actually dry out your lips so you have to keep using the product? Did you know woman consume 2-7 pounds of lip product per year?! Make sure you know what is in yours... Ditch the petroleum, alcohol or even lead!
And last but not least, the scented candle. Have you ever noticed when you burn a candle that it gives off black soot or maybe the scent is so strong you can taste it or you get a headache? I have experienced all of those things. Including rashes on my arms.
Most candles are made of paraffin wax, which is actually bleached petroleum. So choose candles with cotton wicks, natural waxes, like non-gmo soy, beeswax, or coconut, and make sure the candle is scented with pure essential oils, not “fragrance”.

Yeah, morning routines are a thing and there is no denying they’re important.
I remember when I was a kid I was an early riser and I was usually the first one to appear in the kitchen. My mom was already up, sitting at the kitchen table, reading the paper or making a list while she sipped her Salada and my Dad was almost done getting ready for work.
When I was older, I asked her why she got up so early and she said, “it was the only time I had to myself.” Well, don’t I get that now that I am a mom! She was a school teacher and mother to six so, truly, there were no breaks…
It’s definitely taken me some trial and error to nail this down and now that our three boys are school aged, a morning routine is more realistic. When the following things happen before the boys are circling for breakfast, my day, and theirs, is just all around better. When I don’t hit this list, I’m, how shall I say this, yelly. Enough said.
1. Start the night before.
My best mornings actually start the night before. I actually set an alarm on my phone so I stop working (or more than likely, dozing on the couch) and get things together. Taking some time the night before can change your morning. I lay out their clothes and mine, I line up the lunch boxes and put the snacks in, then I take care of my skin, brush my teeth, and maybe read or take a look at my calendar before I go to bed.
2. Get up before they do.
It’s kind of like the airplane thing, put your oxygen mask on first before you help those around you. By waking up early, there I said it, you’re not trying to meet everyone’s needs before your own through sleepy eyes. (Though if you need an ah-mazing eye cream, I know a girl.) Typically 45 mins to 1 hour before the brute squad rises is ideal for me. Gives me plenty of time to do 3, 4, and 5 on this list and put myself together so I don’t embarrass myself at school drop off.
No, I don’t work out this early but I do stretch. I do some simple range of motion exercises my chiropractor gave me and I BREATHE. If you're not up to a full work-out, at least try stretching, it feels good and it's a simple way to take care of yourself.
I don't look at my phone yet! I sit in silence and get my mind together, this includes prayer. You can pray, meditate, journal, or make a to-do list, whatever helps you set the tone for your day.
I try drinking some water first. When you sleep, your body uses up some water so give it a boost before you drink coffee or tea. Do you struggle with just water? Get a fun tumbler and straw, and try infusing it with fruit.
Maybe you need to do these in a different order or maybe your five are completely different but figure out what works for you and be consistent! On the days I’m intentional and get to do this list FIRST, those are the days I’m a better wife, mom, and businesswoman. You can’t control everything that happens in your day but at least prepare yourself to navigate through it…
My husband takes care of himself, he goes to the gym regularly and takes care of his skin. So one of the many things I love about my business is it’s a one-stop shop for my family. I used to go to several different stores to get what we needed. Now everything we need is at my fingertips and arrives at our doorstep. This is a great convenience for our family of five. But we still need to work on my husband telling me before his tube of shaving gel is empty...
About five years ago I started taking a closer look at our product labels because our boys were having reactions. I also took a closer look at the ingredients in my husband’s anti-perspirant because it wasn’t standing up against his long stressful days as a teacher. (In other words, he was a little stinky at the end of the day.) Fragrance and aluminium, just to name a few. The pesky thing about fragrance is it’s a catch-all word that can mask hundreds of unnamed ingredients which can mess with your hormones. Aluminium is in many anti-perspirants, but it’s a neuro-toxin which builds up in your system over time. It’s safest to avoid putting it under your arms in such a sensitive and absorbent area.
While one swipe of these products may not be a big deal, I’m concerned about my family’s toxic body burden, the building up of these toxins over time in our bodies.
So at my urging, my husband made the switch to an all natural deodorant and it totally stands the test of stressful day! He doesn’t come home smelling like a hard day, even though I know he’s had one.
Another must-have for him was cologne, especially on date nights. (Which, we so need to get back to regularly scheduling but anyway…) Since using his non-toxic skincare there is no need for cologne because the subtle scent of pure essential oils smell fresh and yummy.

They’re busy, want convenience, and like what they like, but what they don’t need are hormone disrupting toxins or carcinogens building up in their system. I want to live a good, healthy life with my husband and watch our three boys grow into men. I’m glad I can provide them all with safe products they use every day.
